Former Viper Captain Crowell One Of Six Seawolves Named WCHA Scholar-Athlete:

Former Vernon Vipers captain Chris Crowell is one of six Alaska Anchorage Seawolves who were among a record 96 men’s and women’s student-athletes that made up the seventh annual group of WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, announced by the league on Thursday. Crowell played four seasons in Vernon (2005-2009) is in his third season with the Seawolves.

Six 'Wolves named WCHA Scholar-Athletes

MADISON, Wis. – Six Alaska Anchorage Seawolves were among a record 96 men’s and women’s student-athletes that made up the seventh annual group of WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, announced by the league on Thursday.

Joining 45 repeat honorees and leading the Seawolves with his third award was senior goaltender Dusan Sidor (Poprad, Slovakia), while junior forward Chris Crowell (Williams Lake) collected the second honor of his career. Furnishing the accolade for the first time were senior foward Jade Portwood (Victoria, B.C.) and sophomore forwards Matt Bailey (Winnipeg, MB), Brett Cameron (Spruce Grove, AB) and Andrew Pickering (West Vancouver).

Sidor joins former UAA netminder Jon Olthuis as the only Seawolf with three WCHA Student-Athlete honors.

To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his or her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

The previous record for honorees in one season was 90 in 2010-11.
