Ice Flyers Sign New Defenseman-Trade Short

2/1/2011

Pensacola, FL- The Pensacola Ice Flyers will have a new face on the bench when they take to the ice in Louisiana to face the IceGators on Thursday. Head Coach Todd Gordon announced the addition of Evan Schafer to the Ice Flyers’ roster this afternoon.

Evan is coming to Pensacola after a stint in Europe with the Edinburgh Capitals in the EIHL. The 6’2”, 220 pound defenseman played 34 games for the Capitals racking up 3 goals and 7 assists and 49 penalty minutes.

Evan will not be a new face to all of the squad, however. Prior to the Capitals, Evan spent 4 years at the University of Saskatchewan playing alongside Mark Hinz and Brett Parker. Coach Todd Gordon is expecting the former Huskies’ Captain to “…provide leadership and stability on the blue line and help shore up our defense.”

To make room for the addition of Schafer to the roster, the Ice Flyers traded Robby Short to the Louisiana IceGators. Robby was integral part of the Ice Flyers squad and the team wishes him all the best.
