Falcon Hockey Season Comes to a Close With Game Two Loss

ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- Bowling Green went nose to nose with No. 5/5 Michigan Wolverines in an attempt to stay alive in the second round of the CCHA Tournament but the host spoiled the dream after handing the Falcons a 4-1 loss in the Yost Ice Arena, Saturday night. The Falcons’ season came to a close with the loss but not before the team made waves in the tournament, perhaps signaling to the masses the beginning of a new era for Falcon Hockey.

The Falcons skated into the first intermission with a strong first period, despite a 1-0 deficit to overcome. Lee Moffie scored a short-handed goal in the eighth minute of the opening period, the fifth short-handed tally against of the season for BGSU. In transition, Michigan turned the Bowling Green power play into a U-M attack. Receiving a pass from Luke Glendening along the far half boards, Moffie wound up and fired the puck past sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) for the game’s first goal.

Michigan added two more goals in the second period stemming from 17 shots against Hammond. Lindsay Sparks scored his third goal of the season splitting the Falcon defense through the slot and going top-shelf, blocker side on Hammond. Moffie added his second goal of the game taking an odd-angle shot from the far post and fitting inside the top crossbar to make it a 3-0 score.

Wolverines forward A.J. Treais added a fourth and final goal to the U-M scoreboard shortly into the third period off the draw for Michigan’s second power-play goal of the game and third stemming from their special teams units on the night.

Camden Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) broke up a shutout in the making at the 10:10 mark of the third period on a goal that needed to be reviewed in order to stand. Bowling Green skated the length of the ice setting up a play along the way. Forwards David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) and Chad Sumsion (Woodstock, Ontario) exchanged passes and found Wojtala along the far circle ready to take his shot. Wojtala’s wrist shot found its way up and under the crossbar, even nicking relief U-M goaltender Bryan Hogan’s water bottle, but the shot was declared no-goal and play continued. Upon the next stoppage of play, on-ice officials reviewed the shot and awarded Wojtala and the Falcons a goal.

Hammond finished the night facing 34 shots and made 30 saves, good for his third consecutive 30-plus save game. Senior Nick Eno made his final appearance in collegiate hockey as a player in the very arena he grew up just 30 minutes away from. The Howell, Mich. native made one stop on the only shot he faced in his 8:54 of relief time.

With his eleventh assist of the season, David Solway finishes his career as a Falcon with 73 points (31g, 42a). He returned to the lineup on Friday night after missing the previous four games with a concussion.
Bowling Green finishes the 2010-11 season with an overall record of 10-27-4 overall. They accumulated a 3-21-4 record against CCHA opponents in the regular season and had two shoot out victories. Though their season ended on Saturday night with the loss, the foundation for a new era of Falcon hockey has been laid and work will continue throughout the entire offseason to become better in all three areas of the college hockey game: in the classroom, in the community and on the ice.
