Former Vernon Vipers defenceman, Chay Genoway is one of six former BCHL grads up for the Hobey Baker Award. Genoway played just one season in Vernon (2005-06).

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota junior defenseman Chay Genoway is on the 2008-09 national ballot for the Hobey Baker Award and Fighting Sioux fans can begin casting their votes for Genoway beginning today.

The fan voting phase opens today at the official website of the Hobey Baker Award, www.hobeybaker.com. Fans may cast their votes by following the prompts on screen to make their selection. The fan voting process, which accounts for a full one percent of the total ballot in selecting the final participant, will run until March 8, 2009.

The top 10 candidates for the Hobey Baker Award will be announced on March 19 and the Hobey Hat Trick top three finalists will be announced on April 2. The 2009 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on April 10 at the NCAA Frozen Four in Washington, D.C.

UND has had two Hobey Baker Award winners in its history: forward Ryan Duncan in 2007 and Tony Hrkac in 1987. The Sioux have also had 20 finalists for the award, the most in the NCAA.

Genoway, a native of Morden, Manitoba, enters tonight’s game against Minnesota tied for the team scoring lead with 21 points in 21 games and is aiming to become the first defenseman since James Patrick in 1982-83 to lead the Sioux in scoring. Genoway ranks fourth nationally in scoring among defensemen and his team-leading 19 assists rank third nationally among.

Genoway has registered at least one point in nine of his last 12 games, including a four-assist/five-point performance on Nov. 28 against Cornell.

In 2007-08, Genoway was named to the All-College Hockey News second team and the All-WCHA second team after amassing 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 38 games. Four of his goals came on the power-play, three were game-winners and one came shorthanded.

A management major, last season Genoway received UND’s Archie Krum Memorial Scholarship for leadership qualities, high academic standards and athletic excellence. He also received the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award and was named to the Academic All-WCHA team.

In 102 career games, Genoway has 15 goals and 54 assists for 69 points. His five career game-winning goals are tied for third all-time among Sioux defensemen and are three shy of the school record.
