Their powerplay hasn’t connected yet and they’re taking far too many foolish penalties.
Head coach Mark Ferner will gladly accept those minor problems as the defending B.C. Hockey League champion Vernon Vipers head into Game 3 Friday night in Trail at 2-0.
The Vipers, who have more veterans than the local Legion, have now won 12 straight games dating back to their Royal Bank Cup run last spring.
Defenceman Adam Thompson, who has moved up several notches on the depth chart this season, scored the winner 2:37 into overtime Saturday night as the Snakes stopped the Salmon Arm SilverBacks 4-3 before 1,300 fans at Sunwave Centre.
The SilverBacks went 2-for-12 on the powerplay, while the Vipers were 0-for-7.
“We have a good group here,” said Ferner. “We need to get better efforts from some guys, but that will come.”
Ferner wasn’t happy with the lack of flow caused by the Vipers’ penalty woes, forcing him and assistant Jason Williamson to juggle lines all night. Ferner chose to go with one d-man and three forwards in the 4-on-4 overtime, and Thompson delivered from the point on the third shift.
Connor Jones and Cory Kane drew assists after a face-off win. Thompson grabbed his own rebound and beat goalie Tony Ierfino glove side through loads of traffic.
“We didn’t play our best game,” said Ferner. “We had them 3-1 and let them back in so give them credit; they didn’t quit.”
Rookie Brendan Persley drew in for injured forward Rob Short (knee injury after crashing into the boards in Friday night win) and was tossed for a boarding major eight minutes into the third period.
“I think it was more the impact of the hit,” said Ferner. “He (Persley) brings a lot of energy. He’s our youngest player and it’s a learning process for all the new guys.”
Ferner gave special praise to rookie d-man Garrett Noonan.
Mike Collins, Jonathan Milhouse and Dylan Walchuk also scored for the Vipers, while Travis Statchuk (2) and Mark Zengerle replied for the SilverBacks. Vernon’s Braden Pimm skated miles and pocketed one assist to earn first star.
“I just thought we were a little calmer and ready to play,” said Salmon Arm head coach Matt Hughes. “We played a tighter game and didn’t give up many chances. Maybe Friday, we weren’t ready for the pace of play.”
