Vernon 7 Trail 1

Trail: Devon Murtagh

Tonight was the first game of a home and home series between the Vernon Vipers & Trail Smoke Eaters as the Smokies welcomed the defending RBC Cup Champs into town in the teams home opener. After a short delay due to problems with the lights in the Cominco arena, Cory Kane didnt waist anytime putting the Vipers on the board at 3:44 Kellen and Connor Jones collected the assists. Trail would get three straight powerplays as Graeme Gordon had to be sharp making some big saves early, before Cory Kane scored his second goal of the night shorthanded at 13:11 as Vernon was up 2-0 in the Smokies home opener. The Vipers would take over scoring three goals in the next five minutes of play. Mike Collins setup Jonathan Milhouse at 14:18 putting the Vipers up 3-0. Steven Weinstein on the man advantage at 18:33 put Vernon up 4-0 from Cole Ikkala and Captain Kevin Kraus. Cory Kane would score his third of the night unassisted at 19:53 as the Vipers were up 5-0 after 20 minutes of play. Garrett Beckwith started the 2nd period as Devon Murtagh was pulled after giving up five goals in the 1st period. Braden Pimm on the powerplay at 1:54 with Collins collecting his second assist of the night, and then Bryce Kakoske on the man advantage at 6:16 put Vernon up 7-0 after 40 minutes of play, Adam Thompson and Dan Nycholat picking up the assists. Travis St. Denis would break Graeme Gordon's shutout at 8:43 of the 3rd getting Trail on the board. Sam Mellor collected the lone assist. Graeme Gordon made 23 saves for the win, while Devon Murtagh & Garrett Beckwith both split duties tonight for the Smoke Eaters giving up seven goals between the two on 44 Vernon shots.
