Royal Bank Cup: Vernon @ Summerside: (Game Preview)
Vernon (0-0) @ Summerside (0-0)
Here's a look at the second game in the RBC Cup:
It was ten years ago (1999) that the Vernon Vipers last attended and won the Royal Bank Cup. This is the Vipers 7th appearance at the National Championship (1989,1990,1991,1992,1996,1999 and now 2009) Vernon's drive for five begins, as the team is looking at winning it's 5th National Championship. Vernon & the Prince Albert Raiders are the only two teams to win four National Championships. The Vipers are back after defeating the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL) to win the 2009 Doyle Cup. Connor Jones was the team's leading scorer, with 60 pts, while twin brother Kellen finished third with 52, giving the Vipers quickly a deadly one-two look-alike punch. The Vipers quickly dispatched Penticton in five games and eliminated Salmon Arm in six, moving into the BCHL final, where Vernon smothered the Powell River offence, capturing the league title in six games. Riding the momentum of the BCHL Championship, Vernon made short work of Grande Prairie in the Doyle Cup, sweeping the series in four and booking its spot at the 2009 RBC Cup. The Summerside Western Capitals are making their first trip back to the National Championship since last winning the RBC back in 1997. The Caps finished the MJAHL's best regular season record and placed five players in the leagues top 10 scorers. Led by Brad Smith's 84 points. The Capitals ran almost unopposed through the MJAHL playoffs, sweeping Dieppe and Miramichi and losing just once to Truro to claim the franchise's second league championship. A 2-1 round robin record left Summerside having to play a semifinal at the Fred Page Cup, but it topped Pembroke and then beat Dieppe in double overtime to clinch the East Region berth in Victoria. The only previous meeting between these two teams was way back at the 1989 Centennial Cup. You can listen to todays game on 107.5 Kiss FM with Todd Miller starting at 1:45pm
