Vernon product Rob Short was tossed from last nights game in Westside late in the 3rd period after a check from behind on Warriors Brendan Ellis. With the Warriors leading 4-3 late in the game, the Vipers got the puck in deep as the clock was winding down, Ellis went into the end boards, as Short was in pursuit of the puck & Ellis, Ellis moved the puck behind the Warriors net, as Short checked Ellis from behind. Ellis laid on the ice as Captain Ron Kelly come flying in, going after Short. Some pushing and shoving started as Kelly and Short were tangled up in the corner before Kyle Bigos and a few other Warriors were now all involved. Short was given a 5 minute major for checking from behind and a match penalty (3 games) Did Short deserve the 5 minute major? Yes, You dont want to see any player get hit from behind or see another player check a player from behind. Did Short deserve a match penalty? It was a bad hit but it looked like most check from behinds this season, Ellis got up on his own strength and skated off, wich was great news. I will agree and say Short deserved the penalty but a match? I guess the league will look at the video and go from their. Rookie Kory Roy will now get his chance to suit up for the Vipers, playing the final two games of the regular season and then get his first taste of the Playoffs in Game 1 of the second round. Roy has 2 goals & 2 assists in just 14 games with the Vipers this season. Short plays a key role with the Vipers and will be missed. Short plays hard with lots of intensity, physical play and gives it his all every shift. Short plays an aggressive game but in no way is a dirty player or intended to hurt or injure Brendan Ellis. Lets hope Brendan Ellis is fine and can play tonight.
